Discuss the ritual significance of Fire and Water in ADF liturgy.
Fire and water, together with the tree, make up the three hallows that in Our Druidry allows us to recreate the Sacred Centre. The two elements play a special part in this, with the fire becoming the gateway to the Upperworld and the well becoming the gateway to the Underworld, allowing us to communicate with the Gods/Goddesses and Ancestors.
Additionally fire and water are linked to the Two Powers meditation which is a common element of ADF ritual, fire representing the power of the sky and water representing the energies of the Earth.
Finally, as Mallory tells us, Fire in Water is supposedly one of the proto-Indo-European myths as reconstructed by Dumézil (438) and therefore of special significance to Our Druidry.
